Job Summary: The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the safety programs to assure compliance with the organization's safety vision, principles, and strategies. This role involves creating and enforcing policies, procedures, and practices to ensure a safe and healthy environment. The EHS Manager will work with all levels of the organization and drive consistent communication and results. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of regulatory requirements, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to risk management.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Duties/Responsibilities: Policy Development and Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and other relevant regulations.
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local safety laws while incorporating industry best practices.
- Lead safety initiatives to foster a culture of accountability and risk awareness.
- Evaluate subcontractors for compliance with minimum established safety standards.
- Ensure proper documentation of safety policies, incidents, inspections, and training records.
- Manage proactive safety training and equipment programs, ensuring compliance with internal and industry standards.
- Oversee claims management for workers' compensation, automotive/equipment, and other liability policies, from incident reporting to claim closure.
- Assist in fleet vehicle management, maintenance, and safety compliance.
- Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other regulatory documentation.
- Safety Inspections and Audits Perform facility and jobsite EHS audits, ensuring compliance with federal, state, customer, and company rules, regulations, and laws.
- Collaborate with Operations and Front-Line Supervisors to address safety concerns and implement corrective actions.
- Develop and execute corrective action plans to mitigate non-compliance and safety risks.
- Manage execution, assessment, and improvement of the company life critical safe work practices (i.e., Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Prevention/Protection, Confined Space Entry).
Training and Continuous Improvement
- Provide leadership and direction by establishing and achieving the EHS vision via effective strategies that assure management commitment and employee ownership.
- Design and deliver safety training programs, including new hire orientation and ongoing safety certifications.
- Provide leadership training to Operations and group leaders to strengthen safety awareness and best practices.
- Establish and promote an EHS vision through strategic initiatives that drive leadership commitment and employee ownership.
- Maintain accurate records of employee certifications and training completion.
Incident Management and Reporting
- Participate in and co-lead investigations of workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Oversee the incident management process, ensuring standardized documentation and timely reporting.
- Maintain detailed incident records and develop reports for internal leadership and regulatory agencies.
- Partner with HR and Operations to facilitate return-to-work programs for injured employees.
Metrics & Key Performance Indicators
- Track key safety performance indicators, such as incident rates, near-miss reports, and training completion.
- Develop and maintain safety dashboards and reports using Power BI or other similar platforms.
- Analyze trends and recommend improvements to enhance overall safety performance.
Risk Management
- Identify and assess potential EHS risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Direct and assist with mitigation of identified safety gaps and improvement opportunities.
- Purchase, inventory, and distribute Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to all personnel, as appropriate.
- Support project teams with all phases of risk assessments to ensure safe execution (job hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, contractor selection/orientation/auditing, site specific work plans/permits, post-job review).
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with Operations and Front-Line Supervisors to promote a proactive safety culture.
- Act as the primary liaison for external safety agencies and auditors.
- Provide safety guidance in planning meetings for high-risk projects.
Additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support the organization's goals and adapt to evolving business needs.
Attributes/Abilities: - Must have a satisfactory background/MVR check.
- Must pass a pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug test.
- Highly motivated with demonstrated experience in leading culture change and implementation of best practices.
- Proficiency in computer systems, including but not limited to MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, or other platforms for safety data analysis and reporting.
- Ability to work well alone, or as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage employees at all levels.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, risk management principles, and workers' compensation processes.
- Detail-oriented approach to documentation and compliance.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of safety aligned with PowerX's operational excellence strategy.
Experience and Education: - An Associate or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety with 2-4 years of equivalent industry experience or 6-8 years in safety management within construction or industrial settings.
- Must have or obtain OSHA 30 within the first 30 days of employment.
- Must have or obtain NFPA70E within the first 30 days of employment.
- Must have or obtain First-Aid/CPR/AED within the first 30 days of employment.
- Preferred certifications include Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) credentials such as CSP, ASP, SMS, OHST, CHST, or GSP or other equally recognized industry credentials such as the National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP).
- Nationally recognized electrical safety certifications including CESCP, USOLN, and CUSP a plus.
- Experience managing electrical safety programs in a utility and/or electrical service company is highly desired.
- Experience with electrical safety regulations, including NFPA 70E and NEC compliance, is highly desired.
- Experience in electrical trade is a plus.
Physical Requirements: - Able to work after hours, as needed.
- Sitting, Standing & Walking: Must be able to sit for extended periods while working in an office environment, as well as stand and walk frequently during job site inspections.
- Climbing: Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs to inspect work areas.
- Bending & Kneeling: May need to bend, kneel, or crouch.
- Lifting & Carrying: May need to lift and carry safety equipment, tools, or training materials (typically 25-50 lbs.).
